Beautiful fruity sweet aromas of apple, peach, honey with hints of herbs and petroleum are easy and fun to drink. “Kabinet” is a quality grade, only given to fine German wines that have passed strict quality tests. Though semi-sweet, it has a nice dry mineral finish.
Lotte Pfeffer and Hans Muller took over the winery from Lottes' father in 1984, which by then organic agriculture has been practiced since the mid 70's. It covers the span of 11 ha, mostly on the base of slopes of the Rhine River. They sawed clover, grass, herbs and spread natural fertilizers and compost to improve not only the soil's natural fertility, but also the grape's resistance. It is a habitat that attracts useful insects, which help combat destructive pests. In 2003, after many years trying, Hans and Lotte have convinced and helped all wineries in Luwigshohe to convert to organic agriculture, thus creating a real organic ecosystem in the region. The vineyards sit in Rheinhessen on the terraced slopes of weathered limestone and loess soils. They face mostly south and southwest, maximizing the summer sun at it crosses the Rhine. They cultivate Silvaner, Pinot Noir, Riesling as well as Scheurebe grapes. No matter which though, they push for pure terroir expression. They are slow and patient in the cellar using time and gravity to vinify the wines as gentle as possible. Every process, from vineyard to bottle, occurs as it should. Through biodynamic practices they have achieved a compote natural harmony that has become the signature expression throughout each bottling. With the popularity of their wines spreading, perhaps their gentle, natural ways will expand beyond the region as well.
