After a trip to France where he worked with some of the biggest names in Burgundy, Wells Guthrie realized that the wines he was making in Sonoma didn’t have the elegance and balance he wanted. He sold off his fruit from Sonoma and planted ocean-side, high-altitude vineyards in the ‘Deep End’ of Anderson Valley. People thought he was crazy to plant Pinot Noir there because it was so cold. He also started to farm organically and forbade anything except used oak in the cellar. He also started to pick much, much earlier. The result is a Pinot Noir that is low in alcohol, with lush texture and remarkable balance and elegance. Clean, focused red fruit notes and light yet complex palate. A reminiscent of infamous Hirsch Vineyards’ Pinot.
Food Pairing: Red Meats, Game, Charcuterie, Hard Cheese.
