South Africa has some very special, almost Iconic wines if you take the time to sort through the averages. deTrafford is one of them. At the top of a valley above Stellenbosch (380m A.S.L.), situated on Mont Fleur composed of deep red Hutton decomposed granite soil (excellent conduit for Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah), Established in 1976 by the Trafford family, this estate has consistently produced amazing wines. Roasted bell pepper and hints of forest floor aromas. On the palate the wines is dry and dusty upfront. Lovely fruit restraint as the gravel and chalk terroir is revealed. Delicious plum and black cherry dominate the finish. This wine drinks well today but is a keeper for tomorrow's spectacular event.
