In 1988 when Ernst Loosen took this family business of over 200 years, he realized that with ungrafted old vines in his Germany’s best-rated vineyards he had the raw materials to create world-class wines. He restricted crop size, prohibited chemical fertilization, insisted on very strict fruit selection. Insanely steep with red slate and volcanic soils, Ürziger Würzgarten (ERTS-iger VERTS-garten, meaning “spice garden of Urzig”) produced wines with an enormous fruit aroma and a dense texture on the palate, all held in harmonious balance by fine, focused acidity. This dense, lush Spätlese (late harvest) gets an extra dimension of volume and power from the very old vines. Designated as “Erste Lage,” equivalent to grand cru, their oldest vines (120 years old) are found in this vineyard.
