This is one of the two second wines of Chateau Smith Haut Lafitte. Le Petit Haut Lafitte is made from 45% Merlot and 55% Cabernet Sauvignon. Dense deep dark purple color. Long legs with seductive tears. Nose of cream, vanilla, butterscotch, mocha chocolate, sweet pipe tobacco, and cedar notes. Palate: silky tannins, medium to full body, dark blackberry with a dry, structured mid palate of black cherries, currant and a subtle spice finish. An amazingly complex wine. The great thing about this 09 is that it is so lovely and approachable now yet seems to have the backbone to sustain itself over the next several years. With the dry finish and solid tannins it seems this wine will develop in bottle and the fruit will mellow leaving an exquisite Bordeaux in the next 3-12 years.
